VW Campervan (1950 - 1979)
The VW camper developed out of Adolf Hitler's VW Beetle people's car project, and became a symbol of hippy heaven in surfing '60s California. Developed as a substantially enlarged VW Beetle van (hence the rear-engine), it offered a unique combination of style, affordability, space and indestructibility. Unlike other vans of the time, it was also quite refined - although motorway crosswinds could make for a white-knuckle ride. Production of air-cooled vans continued in Brazil until 2006.
