Renault 5 GT Turbo (1985)
It was a raucous turbocharged version of Renault's people's car, the 5, and meant as a rival for the 205 GTi. Weighing a mere 875kg and producing 115bhp meant the 5 Turbo was quick too, hitting 60mph in 7.1 seconds. The engine was only a 1.4 litre - hence the need for excessive turbo charging. Most original Turbos have become extinct in the last few years - they were a favourite for tuning, some produced as much as 200bhp - although some later watercooled versions have survived longer. Turbo lag was always a problem, as was relatively poor handling. The little front tyres struggled to cope with putting down all that power and steering the car at the same time. Still a phenomenal pocket rocket though.
