Toyota made the green car famous with the Prius. Since its launch in the late 1990s, it was adopted by eco campaigners, environmentalists – and, crucially, Hollywood celebrities. The wider public duly followed, snapping up the petrol-electric hybrid in droves. The five-door family hatch is very costly, but can run on electric power alone in town, saving on fuel. The average is a great 65.7mpg.
