A red Ferrari Enzo is on track to break the record for the highest sale price on eBay UK.

The sports car has so far attracted a top bid of more than £300,000 on the online auction site.

That figure smashes the record for the most expensive item sold on eBay.co.uk, held since 2000 by a £103,000 handbag owned by Lady Thatcher.

According to the site, the Ferrari is one of only 400 Enzo models ever made.

The left-hand drive two-seater car has just 500 miles on the clock which were apparently run up during publicity shots.

It is being sold by an eBay vendor called flogit4u. But the listing warns that the car is not in the UK and the buyer will be responsible for organising transport and paying any import fees.

The current highest bid does not meet the reserve price required by its vendor. If bids do not hit that price, the car will not sell.

But another Enzo model sold for £540,000 two years ago on eBay's Swiss website - the company's highest value sale yet in Europe.

Jody Ford, head of eBaymotors.co.uk said: "This sale shows that eBay has become the place to buy and sell more or less anything.

"From everyday items sold at fixed prices to collectables such as this Ferrari that are sold in the auction-style format, the site attracts buyers and sellers for almost any conceivable object."

The auction for the car closes on Thursday, September 21.
