- Quiz: Driving in translation
From scary Spaniards to undertaking Italians, it seems the British motorist has something to fear when driving on the Continent.
Although thousands of us hop over the Channel every year to enjoy some summer sun, many Brits admit to being scared of what await them on the autoroutes and autobahns on the Continent.
A survey carried out by the RAC has thrown up some interesting figures with a fifth of those polled fearing dangerous manouevres when driving in Italy and more than 25% claim to have experienced road rage there. Undertaking is far more common on the autostrades as well according to Brits while overtaking in Spain (probably on the left or the right) is even worse - complete with extra use of the horn as well.
Britons' wariness of European roads is complemented by poor general knowledge of driving laws and an ignorance of what to do in an incident or accident. Once common misconception (48% of respondents) is that fuel is cheaper in Europe but a quick stop to fill up in France, Germany, Italy and Belgium - four of the five most popular European driving destinations - will soon put you right. In these countries, unleaded is up to 23 cents more expensive per litre. It could get expensive if you're got a 2,000 mile trip planned.
