M56 brought to a standstill by fight in the middle of the motorway

An alcohol-fuelled punch-up brought the M56 to a standstill yesterday afternoon, delaying dozens of football fans on the way to watch the Manchester City vs. Manchester United match at the Etihad Stadium.

The fight is believed to have started on the hard shoulder of the motorway near to Junction 6, before a man began to weave his way through cars, forcing shocked motorists to slow down and stop.

According to the Manchester Evening News, one driver reported that a man had been 'knocked out' in the central reservation while others said there had been a fight on the road.

Footage of Police leading a man to a police car was later uploaded onto Twitter, and in a statement a Greater Manchester Police spokesman said police were alerted to the incident at 1.49pm.

He commented: 'Police attended after reports of a male lying on the hard shoulder just before junction 5.

'There were further reports that he was in the carriageway and appeared drunk.

'He was then arrested by police and taken to hospital due to intoxication.'
