The McLaren P1 is pretty much as advanced as performance road cars get. Its 903bhp combination of petrol and electric motors can propel it from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds and cover the standing quarter mile sprint in an eye-watering 10.2 seconds.
Serious stuff in anyone's books, then, but being a road car, the P1 is hampered by the need to meet legislative requirements; mainly to ensure you don't hurt yourself or anyone else unduly should you run out of talent and stuff it into the side of a school bus. To show off exactly what the P1 is capable of when unleashed from these shackles, McLaren has revealed this, the P1 GTR.
Shown for the first time at last weekend's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California, the P1 GTR is described by its maker as the "best driver's car in the world on track". Just 35 lucky individuals will get the chance to test that claim, and will be selected from the 375 owners of the P1 road car. The price for this exclusivity? £1.9million.
However, for that wallet-busting price, owners will get something rather more than a lower ride-height, huge spoiler and gaudy sticker set (though that's included too). McLaren has comprehensively revised the P1 to make it the ultimate track tool. The engine has been uprated from 903 to 986bhp – the same output at the original Bugatti Veyron.
The chassis and aero-kit has also been extensively revised, with an 80mm wider front track improving front axle grip.
A McLaren spokesperson told Autocar: "With even greater emphasis on aerodynamic performance through its dramatic bodywork, the P1 GTR will also feature race-proven slick tyres, a fixed ride height, enhanced power delivery from the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) powertrain and F1-derived Drag Reduction System (DRS) from the large, fixed rear wing, along with an ERS (Energy Recovery System) push-to-pass system. This all combines to offer the ultimate track experience."
All GTR models will be built and operated by Mclaren's Special Operations division, with drivers offered the opportunity to enter the marque's driver development program to improve their skills and get the most out of the car.
The unveiling of the P1 GTR coincides with the 20th anniversary of the launch of its predecessor, the F1 GTR, which took an overall win at the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1995. The new car is being launched alongside a new track-only version of the 650S, dubbed the 650S Sprint.
