An allegedly 'intoxicated' mother has been jailed after she made four children ride home from a swimming class on the boot and bonnet of her car because she didn't want their trunks getting the seats wet, police have stated.
Kisha Young, 39, from Fort Worth, Texas, allegedly asked the children – aged between eight and 14 – to make the one-minute journey from the Creekside Community Pool to their home perched atop the bonnet and boot of the car.
Witnesses said that the children were flung from the car's bodywork when an allegedly 'intoxicated' Young rounded a tight bend. According to onlookers, she didn't even notice until she pulled up at the end of the road.
All four children were injured, one seriously, and required treatment for gravel rash and bruising at a local hospital. At time of press, the 12-year-old daughter of a second mother who was sat in the passenger seat is still being treated for a serious head injury at Cook's Children's Hospital in Fort Worth, according to WFAA TV.
Witness Holly Powell spoke of what she saw: "There was one laying on the floor... there was a girl sitting next to her that was getting checked out; she had blood on her shirt," she told MyFoxDFW.com.
"And then there was two kids that had road burns that were walking up and down the street."
Police say Young was arrested on suspicion of intoxication assault and additional charges are expected to be sought against the driver and the 31-year-old mother of the other children involved.
"Officers were advised that the driver and passenger of the vehicle [mothers of the children] allowed the children to ride outside the vehicle because their clothes were wet," the police department told the Star Telegram.
A spokeswoman added that police are currently investigating the incident but believe alcohol and driver error were to blame.
