New car sales up

May saw yet another increase in the UK car market, meaning it has experienced its 27th consecutive month of growth, breaking a record that was set in the late 1980s.

A total of 194,032 new cars were registered in the UK last month, which tips the total number of cars registered in 2014 over the one million mark.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, "The new car market has now grown in every month since March 2012 – the longest period of growth on record and a reflection of the UK's ever-improving economic conditions.

"Over the past 27 months, increasingly confident consumers have been drawn to some fantastic new products, attracted by innovative technologies, improved fuel economy and competitive deals helping make a new car more affordable. With SMMT forecasting an overall rise of around 6% over the year, the coming months should see some levelling off in growth rates as underlying demand stabilises."

The list of best-sellers has remained relatively unchanged since April, with the Ford Fiesta topping the list, selling 9,450 models in May. The Volkswagen Golf, Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Focus followed close behind.

The BMW 3 Series dropped out of the top ten for the first time, replaced by Vauxhall's chunky Mokka crossover - it sold 2,801 models.
