Volkswagen unveils bonkers 496bhp GTI Roadster Concept
Now, it seems the picturesque lakeside gathering is an excuse for Volkswagen Group engineers to pull a few too many all-nighters, gorge themselves on Domino's pizza, and dive into a six-pack of Bavarian lager while they concoct the craziest concept cars known to man.
Previous years have seen VW Golfs with W12 engines installed under the bonnet, Skoda Fabias with roofs removed and turbos boosted and pick-up trucks with gangster rap wheels and 270bhp on tap.
This weekend's gathering will be no different, as a number of insane designs are set to be unveiled. One such vehicle is the Volkswagen GTI Roadster Concept.
Not only does it pack an eye-watering 496bhp thanks to the biturbo 3.0-litre V6 that resides underneath the lightweight shell, but it also features styling that is usually the reserve of the virtual world.
That's because the car was originally created as 'digital-only' design project for Sony PlayStation's Gran Turismo 6 videogame but VW has committed to bringing its angular creation into the real world.
The concept measures up slightly shorter Golf GTI – from which most of the chassis and drivetrain are derived – but it sits much lower and good deal wider to achieve that truly aggressive road presence.
Performance figures are impressive: 596bhp available underneath the right foot, 560Nm torque developed between 4,000 and 6,000rpm and a 0-62mph sprint time of just 3.6 seconds thanks, in part, to the concept weighing just 1,420kg.
Unfortunately, VW doesn't plan to put this mighty fine piece of machinery into production but GT6 players will be able to virtually take it for a spin when the car becomes available to download from mid-June.
