It's a popular way of keeping children entertained on longer car journeys, but one teen driver found out why you shouldn't partake in holding your breath while driving through tunnels if you're behind the wheel, after fainting and colliding with three other cars.
> Washington local Daniel Calhon was driving through a tunnel on Highway 26 near Portland, Oregon, when he attempted to hold his breath for the duration of the passageway.
So determined was the 19-year-old to make it through the tunnel on a single breath – which would have only taken around 10 seconds at the posted 55mph speed limit – that rather than gasp for air, he simply fainted at the wheel.
His Toyota Camry then drifted across the tunnel into the path of oncoming traffic, where it collided with a Ford Explorer SUV.
Both cars were sent into the tunnel wall before the crumpled wrecks came to rest in the carriageway. It was then that the Camry was further hit by an oncoming pickup truck.
Thankfully no one was seriously injured in the pile-up, though four people, including the dopey teenager, received medical treatment at the scene.
Calhon is now due to appear in court charged with reckless driving, three counts of reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault.
Oregon police have stated that they do not believe drink or drugs was a contributory factor to the crash.
