The elegant lines and squat saloon body of the Citroen DS 5LS can already be enjoyed by customers in China but the unveiling of a performance R concept hints at possible sporting upgrades for the premium model.
Said to be 'a nod' towards Citroen's World Rally Championship pedigree, the DS 5LS R concept develops an impressive 300bhp from its highly turbocharged 1.6-litre engine.
To improve handling, the chassis has been lowered by some 15mm compared to the production version and the front tracks have been widened. The flared wheel arches and enormous 'blade' alloy wheels further add to the performance credentials.
An extensive use of carbonfibre components both inside and outside the vehicle serve to reduce weight and improve performance, too.
Inside, the eye-catching concept ditches bucket seats and race harnesses for a premium approach. The cabin is fully lined with leather and Alcantara, including the dashboard and steering wheel, while the upholstery is slathered in embossed leather and Carmine Red (matching the exterior paint) stitching.
It is highly likely that a 'performance' DS 5LS will be available to the Chinese market but like its saloon counterpart, it won't be seen on UK forecourts any time soon.
Fans of Citroen's crazy concepts can check back on April 20-29 when the Beijing motor show will be in full swing.
