Audi has just revealed that it is braced to expand its A1 range with a fiery S1 variant of its popular, premium city car.
The rapid subcompact model boasts a 228bhp 2.0-litre TFSI engine that is capable of propelling the mini racer from 0-62mph in just 5.8 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.
Fiat and Mini are likely to be panicking slightly as the aforementioned performance figures embarrass those of the 500 Esseese and John Cooper Works. To compound matters, the upcoming S1 will feature Audi's revered quattro all-wheel-drive system; so expect unparalleled amounts of grip in varying weather conditions and road surfaces.
Audi has chosen to name its tiny tearaway after the World Rally Championship-winning Audi S1 of the 1980s and although it has lost the wedge exterior and enormous rear wing of old, it remains a speed-focussed machine.
The German marque has fitted S-specific sports suspension, reworked the electromechanical power steering and provided the driver with electronically adjustable damper settings to get the most out of every driving situation.
Inside, punters are treated to specific S-line detailing, including grey-backed instruments, stainless steel pedals, sports seats as well as the latest Audi tech, such as a WiFi hot spot and BOSE audio system.
