Adding rough-and-ready bits of trim to vehicles seems to be the trendy thing to do these days and Volkswagen isn't one to miss a fashionable opportunity.
The tiny up! city car has proven to be quite the hit with canny buyers who require a frugal runaround that fits into miniscule parking spaces, but now VW will offer it in a distinctly off-road flavour.
The cross up! features black mouldings on the wheel arches and sills, plus full-length door protector strips topped with 'cross up!' lettering. Flashes of silver will be plastered onto the roof rails, wing mirrors and bumpers while the ride height gets jacked-up slightly to house the bespoke 16-inch alloys.
The interior receives some attention, too, with specially trimmed seats (in a choice of red or anthracite) and an instrument panel with high-quality dash (in a choice of red, black or dark silver) aim to give off a refined feel.
The upmarket ambience is rounded off by chrome trim around the air outlets and tachometer and by door tread plates with 'cross up!' lettering. Engines are identical to the regular city car's, so that means a 1.0-litre three-cylinder available with two outputs: 74bhp and 54bhp.
The cross up! will go on show at the Geneva motor show next month and be released in Germany towards the end of summer but there are no solid plans to bring it to the UK yet.
A VW spokesperson said: "the decision could go either way".
