Up-and-coming Manchester United midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe has been charged with driving with excess alcohol and will appear in court next week.

The charges related to an incident which happened last Saturday at 2.15pm, when a Range Rover collided with a transit van in Heywood, near Rochdale. The van subsequently crashed into the wall of a house.

Great Manchester Police said the front seat passenger of the Range Rover suffered minor whiplash and both vehicles were badly damaged.

The 19-year-old star will appear at Bury Magistrates Court on October 25, a police spokesman confirmed.

Tunnicliffe made his debut for United against Newcastle in a Capital One Cup match in September.

On the club's website, the player is described as "somebody who is highly regarded at Old Trafford".

The midfielder is following in the footsteps of long-time United player Rio Ferdinand. The former England captain was banned from driving for six months in September after he was photographed three times driving past the same camera to and from training.

Other football stars in trouble for driving misdemeanours recently include former Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira and Newcastle United's Demba Ba.
