Volvo has showcased a new version of the V40 hatch which has more than a little of the country casual look about it.

Looking as though it's donned a Barbour jacket and pulled on a pair of Hunter wellies, the V40 Cross Country has been designed for people "who want a sense of adventure in their everyday life".

The news comes just a week after the unveiling of the V40 R-Design, and now completes Volvo's autumn collection made up of the well-cut suit (V40), the sporty trainer (V40 R-Design) and the classic country wax jacket (V40 Cross Country).

To suit its outdoors nature, the V40 Cross Country features a ride pumped up by 40mm, a revised front bumper with in-built day-time running lights, sculptured muscular door-sills and a different rear bumper with a skid plate.

There's also some dark bodywork trim, a honeycomb grille and roof rails suitable for carrying dead pheasants or a kayak.

Inside there's a number of special details too, like a whole wealth of personalisation options available. For example, tick the box for "Raw Copper" paintwork, and you can have the seat stitching in a contrasting colour.

Just like the other V40s, the Cross Country can be ordered with any engine you like - from the eco 1.6-litre diesel D2 right up to the all-wheel-drive 2.5-litre petrol T5 model. It's the latter which gets hill descent control to help drivers scale kerbs, pot holes or even the odd grassy hillock.

The V40 is the first Volvo to wear the Cross Country name since 1997. Back then it was the V70 that wore it, which then became the V70 XC and the XC70. But Volvo has clarified the V40 hasn't been called an XC40 because it doesn't boast different body panels or a high-up seating position as other XC models do.

There's no word on pricing yet, but the Swedish firm believes it'll sell around 8,500 of them a year in Europe - and, as far as we can work out, the V40 Cross Country has no direct rival.
