Skoda is going from strength to strength – and consigning those corny old gags to the waste paper basket in the process.

The Czech marque enjoyed a strong August, posting 67,700 sales around the world.

This represents a 12.1 per cent increase over the same month in 2011 and is the strongest August in the company's history.

The firm's January-to-August figures are also looking good.

So far this year, 633,300 cars have been delivered worldwide, representing an 8.5 per cent increase on the same period last year when 583,600 units were sold.

The introduction of the new Skoda Rapid is expected to make an important contribution to sales after its world debut at the Paris Auto Salon later this month. The European market will get the compact saloon in October this year.

It's estimated that Skoda's global market share grew to 3.2 per cent in August. Werner Eichhorn, Skoda board member for sales and marketing, said: "We have outperformed the market in almost all sales regions, in an environment that is becoming more and more difficult. Despite stronger headwinds from the market, we hope we can continue to grow in the future."

Skoda UK achieved a record first half of 2012, registering over 28,000 cars. The UK arm of the business is hoping to beat its record sales year in 2011 in which they sold 45,000 cars and grabbed a 2.7 per cent share of the market.

Skoda received 18 awards for customer service and product satisfaction in 2011 and has collected 14 awards so far this year. They have also been in top 10 of the J.D. Power survey of customer satisfaction for the last NINETEEN years.

Those accolades are evidently transferring well into year-on-year sales growth; not bad for a brand once the punchline of all motoring jokes.
