Not to be outdone by Nissan's appeal to the urban market with its Juke Ministry of Sound, Fiat is going for the urban market with the 500 Street.

The "down with the kids" 500 features air conditioning, sports seats, 16-inch alloy wheels, Blue&Me infotainment, leather steering wheel with radio controls, and rear spoiler.

There are three engine choices: 1.2-litre petrol, 0.9-litre TwinAir or 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel, while there is a choice of five colours: Bossanova White, Pasodoble Red, Crossover Black, Electroclash Grey or Matt Black.

At £11,360 (1.2), £12,760 (TwinAir) and £13,760 (1.3), the hatchback-only model is priced the same as the 500 Lounge version. It costs £1,400 more than the 500 Pop, but the extra equipment is said to be worth £1,800.

Elena Bernardelli, marketing director, Fiat Group Automobiles UK said of the new car. "Its combination of bold, sporty looks with a high level of standard equipment will make it a serious consideration for any value-conscious buyer."

Incidentally if you are wondering why such a trendy city car never seems to have anything to do with Apple products, Fiat signed up to Microsoft for its "Blue& Me" technology, so Fiat tends to be an Apple-free zone. Microsoft teamed up with Nokia for mobile phones, which would have been trendy five years ago – but an association with Nokia is probably something car companies would probably avoid at present.
