Ford has put a price on the eagerly anticipated Focus ST hot hatch: £21,995. The estate version will cost from £23,095.
That actually makes it startling value for money - a five-door Golf GTI costs £26,000, and it only has 207bhp, whereas the Focus has 247bhp.
In fact, that power output puts the Focus ST much closer to the 266bhp Golf R, which is £32,000.
That said, climb up the ST specification ladder and it begins to get significantly more expensive. A basic ST gets 18-inch rims, Recaro cloth seats, manual air con, DAB and Bluetooth, while an extra grand and a half buys an ST-2, which adds part leather, a Sony stereo, auto wipers and lights, and some proper branded ST mats.
Still, the £25,500 it costs for an ST-3, which has full leather, heated seats, bi-xenon lamps, LED daytime running lights and keyless entry, is still less than a basic Golf GTI.
No word on a 0-62mph time yet, but figure on six seconds or less. We do know that it returns 39.2mpg and 169g/km, though - a 20% improvement on the old ST.
It goes on sale in June, with first deliveries coming in September.
