UK motor charity SKIDZ is raffling off a track-prepared Porsche 968 to raise money so that the next generation of young mechanics can be trained up.
500 tickets are being sold, for £25 - and the winner will even get a Porsche experience at Silverstone chucked in, too. The car is a 1994 Porsche 968 – given that young mechanics may not have been born in 1994, we better explain what that is. It was the very last of the four-cylinder Porsche range that evolved through the 924 and 944 into the 968.
The 968, especially the Club Sport version, was rated as being one of the best-handling cars of its day, winning "Performance Car of the Year" in 1993. The engine has 3.0 litres with 240bhp, so performance is strong even by modern standards: 160mph for the lighter Club Sport version.
We would also highly recommend the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone - read about our visit here. In half a day they can take a complete novice and give them a great introduction to driving on a circuit. They won't turn you into Jenson Button overnight, but they will give you a great insight into how to balance a car around bends to allow more speed than you would think possible. We have done it a couple of times and cannot recommend the instructors too highly.
All funds raised will go towards the SKIDZ automotive education project. Since 1998 SKIDZ has offered vocational projects in motor mechanics to young people from the age of 13. Each £1,000 raised by the raffle will support a young person's place with the project for one year. The closing date for entries is Thursday 31st May 2012 and the winner will be notified by Monday 4th June.
