Jaguar Land Rover unveiled one new production car, one concept and a plan for world domination (well, the last one is a bit of an exaggeration, but they certainly have big plans).

The production car is the XF Sportbrake, which is Jaguar's first executive load-carrier, the X-Type estate having been a size smaller. With air suspension and a luggage compartment a fraction larger than a BMW 5 Series Touring, at 1675 litres, the Sportbrake is a surprisingly practical large estate. Jaguar expects it to account for around 25% of XF sales.
The concept car is the Range Rover Evoque Convertible, first seen exclusively on Autoblog last week.


Concept cars tend to fall into one of two categories: either cars just about to go into production, or ones that are still years away. Perhaps surprisingly, the Evoque Convertible falls into the latter category.

Speaking privately, JLR told us that this is genuinely their first idea of such a car. No work has been done on productionising the design, or even a decision on where it would be built. It probably will happen, but not before 2014.

The other news was just how fast JLR is growing. Virtually all Land Rover models saw big increases in sales last year (even the 10 year old Range Rover was up 25%), and JLR says it is only just getting into its stride.

Jaguar points out that it takes 13.1% of the premium market in the UK, but only 1.1% of China.

Even a one percentage point increase in China would be a big number. With profits of over £1 billion last year, and the expectation of much bigger profits this year, JLR can finance a lot of new products, such as the Range Rover Mark Four, new Land Rover Defender and smaller Jaguar Coupe. That is good news for Britain, as JLR has already created 4,000 new jobs in the last 18 months, with more to come.
