Toyota's Geneva concept could revolutionise superminis
Toyota has shown another teaser picture of the FT-Bh concept that's due to star on its Geneva Motor Show stand, promising it will have CO2 emissions around 50% lower than the average small car.
Its name is a quite simple acronym for Future Toyota B-segment hybrid - and that's how it will boast such groundbreaking emissions.
Toyota's poster boy hybrid, the Prius, is clearly an economical car (72.4mpg and 89g/km CO2), but in pure fuel use terms it's beaten by a good few family hatchbacks - the 74.3mpg Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion, for instance.
So let's look at the supermini segment to see what this clever new hybrid will be facing...
The Volkswagen Polo Bluemotion, to stay with VW, returns a whopping 80.7mpg with 91g/km CO2 emissions.
Now, Toyota claims its new supermini will beat the class average by 50% - not the class best - but we can still safely assume that it will make compost of the Bluemotion Polo.
For a start, Toyota says it will weigh less than 800kg - compared to over 1,000kg for the Polo, and more than 1,400 for the Prius. Given it's likely to use the same running gear as the Prius, albeit downsized, it bodes well.
For the time being we don't know what it looks like - all will be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show - but Toyota says it is "designed for maximum fuel efficiency, [and] built using economically viable methods and materials."
"Low weight, aerodynamic performance, powertrain efficiency, thermal energy management and electricity saving," are its main principles, continues the company.
