After securing pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone two weeks ago, Mark Webber goes one better on Saturday in Germany's cool Eifel region.
Webber: "My performance in recent races has become a bit better, and this track has appeared to suit me in the past. I think that the session went rather well with the exception of my first attempt on soft tyres in Q2. It was very gratifying in the end to see that no one could catch me. I was really on my absolute limit, and the lap was pretty good, but we had a really very tense wait of 30 seconds or so – it was a very close session for all of us."
Even if he was finally only five hundredths up on Lewis Hamilton, the Australian driver is aiming for his first win of the season: "It was a good qualifying session today, but tomorrow I want to be in the lead on one particular lap, and that's the final one. I'm going to fight really hard to do that. We should be in a good position, but as we've seen with McLaren, you can be in for a rough ride. Let's see who has the smoothest race tomorrow. At any rate, we'll have one or two calls to make from the cockpit, because it can quickly turn to rain in these mountains. Rain has been a threat for the last two days, but so far, nothing."
