There were horrifying scenes on German television over the weekend when a stunt involving an Audi A8 went badly wrong.

Samuel Koch, 23, was taking part in Wetten, Dass? - one of Germany's most popular television shows - when his attempt to jump over a succession of cars left him in intensive care with a fractured spine.

He had already jumped over a Smart Fortwo and a Ford Focus, but the Audi A8 driven by his father Christopf proved to be a leap too far.

This is the first major accident on the hit German TV show which inspired British show 'You Bet!' in nearly 30 years of broadcasts, but this incident has shocked the entire country.

Wetten, Dass? showcases wacky stunts and improbable challenges where audience members and guest celebrities must bet to say whether they will be successful or not.

Teen sensation Justin Bieber was due to sing on the show but quickly pulled out after the accident, which has lead to headlines in the US such as 'German TV accident stops Bieber performance'.

Koch was taken to hospital in Dusseldorf as the show's live broadcast was cancelled, where he remained in a critical condition in intensive care.

He was operated on over the weekend and the latest reports suggest that his doctors are bringing him out of an induced coma to assess the extent of his injuries.
