Porsche is showing off what is expected to be one of the stars of the Los Angeles Auto Show – the stripped back and lightweight Cayman R.
Not only is it 55kg lighter than the standard Cayman, it also provides an extra 10bhp over the next-most powerful version of the mid-engined Porsche.
To shed the bulk, Porsche has stripped out the air conditioning and the stereo, and has also fitted a number of lightweight components, including a smaller petrol tank. It also gets the 19-inch lightweight alloy wheels from the Boxster Spyder, aluminium door skins that appear in the 911 Turbo and GT3, and carbon fibre bucket seats.
All this weight saving, and the engine retuning, means that the manual Cayman R shaves 0.2 seconds from the Cayman S's 0-62mph time, taking it down to 5.0 seconds flat. The PDK version goes even quicker, doing the sprint in 4.7 seconds, with both cars hitting 175 and 174mph respectively.
The new version gets revised exterior styling, with a contrastingly coloured rear spoiler and a 'Porsche' detailed stripe down the side setting it apart from the normal Caymans. It also gets the option of a new Peridot metallic paint – the colour seen in the press shots.
The Cayman R goes on sale in the UK in February next year and will cost from £51,731.
